Bianca: Hello everyone! We’re thrilled to share exciting news about the Urban Jazz Dance Company Home Season 2025. Every year, Urban Jazz Dance Company creates powerful work that reflects what’s happening in our society. Each season, we use art to spark conversation, awareness, and change. This year, we are presenting two meaningful productions: First is the world premiere of The Power of Shuffling Through Deaf Education. This full-length work addresses the ongoing lack of access to education for Deaf, BIPOC, and disabled children. The piece is inspired by true stories shared by parents, educators, lawyers, and others who have fought for equity in schools. And following Friday evening’s show, we will host a Post-Performance Panel Discussion. This panel will include parents and community leaders who have lived these experiences firsthand. Stay tuned for the official announcement of the panelists — it’s going to be a powerful conversation you don’t want to miss. Second, we are proud to partner with Guerilla Opera to present the San Francisco premiere of Ululations and Gurgles of the Invisible. This chamber opera, composed by Elisabet Curbelo, is a groundbreaking work that blends experimental music, contemporary dance, and American Sign Language. The leading star is the spectacular Zahna Simon, and Deaf Artists with other UJDC’s dancers. All choreographed by Mx. Hunter! Do we need to say more? The piece draws inspiration from the hidden voices and vibrations that often go unheard in mainstream culture. Through live singers, instrumentalists, dancers, and Deaf performers, the production creates a conversation between sound, movement, and sign language. It explores what it means to listen not only with the ears, but with the body and the eyes — revealing the beauty of communication across different sensory worlds. You don’t want to miss this! The productions will take place on October 24th to 26th, Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 3pm. It is located at CounterPulse, 80 Turk St, San Francisco, CA. ‘The Power of Shuffling Through Deaf Education’ is on Friday and Saturday, while ‘Ululations and Gurgles of the Invisible’ is on Saturday and Sunday. There will be ASL and English Interpretation [on screen yellow text: New update: Spanish available Friday show and Panel]. CART captions and Live Captions are available for Friday’s Performance. Subtitles are available for specific parts of the performance on Saturday and Sunday. Audio Description is available for Saturday’s Performance only. Tickets are on a sliding scale from $15 to $35. As Deaf people, as Disabled people, as human beings — our voices deserve to be heard.
The Power of Shuffling Through Deaf Education and Ululations and Gurgles of the Invisible speak in parallel.
One follows the stories of Deaf children navigating the barriers of education, while the other reminds us that sound and listening are not limited to the ears — they live in our bodies, our eyes, and our spirit. Both works insist that Deaf and Disabled people are not invisible, and that no community should go unheard.
We all carry stories. For too long, history has tried to silence us through theories and systems that denied Deaf and Disabled people the right to speak for ourselves — from being treated as inferior to being told we must rely on hearing people for survival. We reject that. We don’t need anyone to speak for us. We speak for ourselves, in our own words, in our own terms.
These performances are not only art — they are calls for equity, respect, and recognition. They remind us that whether as children or adults, we must recreate spaces where Deaf, Disabled, and BIPOC communities are heard, seen, and valued.
